About WEIS

This year marks the 22nd consecutive year of the Workshop on the Economics of Information Security (WEIS). The field of the economics of privacy and security has grown substantially since it first began. However, the workshop has remained the leading forum for interdisciplinary scholarship on information security, combining expertise from the fields of computer science and electrical engineering, economics, social science, business, law, and policy. Each year, WEIS is attended by 100-150 academic researchers, industry practitioners, policymakers, and graduate students.

Sponsorship of WEIS helps the community by allowing us to keep registration costs low, while also demonstrating corporate commitment to information security research and innovation.

Why WEIS?

WEIS embodies the idea that responding to security problems through purely technical means is a losing strategy because it leads to an arms race. Interdisciplinary research is needed: an understanding of attacker incentives, motivations, and behaviors is necessary to accurately model future attacks so that information security professionals can more effectively defend their systems. WEIS is also regularly attended by policymakers, because it provides a forum for them to both understand how to craft more effective policies, as well as directly interact with those who their policies are likely to impact.

Benefits of Sponsorship

Sponsorship of WEIS provides the following benefits:

  • Demonstrate Thought Leadership: By sponsoring WEIS, organizations demonstrate their commitment to improving information security systems, practices, and policies through innovative interdisciplinary research. WEIS sponsors are featured prominently on the public website and in the materials distributed to attendees (depending on sponsorship level).
  • Recruitment Opportunities: At its heart, WEIS is an academic workshop in which researchers present peer-reviewed studies on information security. As a result, WEIS is regularly attended by PhD students and professors. Many of these students are actively trying to make connections with industry in order to find internship opportunities, employment upon graduation, or collaboration opportunities.
  • Competitive Advantage: WEIS attendees have access to cutting-edge research during the presentation sessions, as well as opportunities to network with the researchers during breaks and social events. This means that they are among the first to receive exposure to new information security research that can directly by applied to their organizations.
